Ever wondered what stories a century-old train might hold? Join Abbey to find out on Puffing Billy!
Puffing Billy, Australia’s beloved steam train, offers a nostalgic journey through the Dandenong Ranges, just an hour from Melbourne. Built in 1900, it now serves as a major tourist attraction, thanks to over 300 volunteers. Daily excursions run from Belgrave to Lakeside, with additional routes on weekends. Experience the charm of a century-old steam train but be prepared for soot and smut from the coal-fired locomotive. Sunglasses or goggles are recommended for a comfortable ride. Enjoy the scenic beauty and rich history of this iconic railway, operating year-round except on Christmas Day.
This scenic trip through the lush Dandenong Ranges, from Belgrave to Lakeside, not only highlights Victoria’s verdant beauty but also transports you back to the early 1900s, capturing the charm of coal-fired steam locomotion. As the train chugs along, passengers are treated to stunning vistas and the authentic sounds of steam travel, making it a vibrant escape into history.
Upon reaching Lakeside, the adventure continues at the modern Lakeside Visitor Centre, nestled in the heart of Emerald Lake Park. This facility seamlessly blends contemporary architecture with the rustic allure of the railway, offering a variety of activities. Visitors can dine at the contemporary café, enjoy leisurely paddle boat rides on Lake Emerald, and more. Abbey explores all that the centre has to offer, picks up a delicious grazing box from the café, and enjoys a leisurely picnic at Lake Emerald before taking the train back to Belgrave.
