Armadale Stretch

Entrée, main, dessert is a pretty standard meal plan. But every now and then, you need to turn it on it’s head. And that means starting with dessert.

And the perfect place to do it is Melbourne’s favourite new patisserie – Mietta by Rosemary in Malvern. The creations here have set Instagram alight, from the eight-layer carrot cake, to the cotton sponge with raspberry jam and Chantilly cream, to the tiramisu-inspired honey sponge, honeymisu.

The powerhouse behind Mietta by Rosemary is Rosemary Andrews, who has put her years of experience as a pastry chef in some of Australia’s best restaurants into these cakes and it really shows.

When you’re ready for your other two courses you don’t need to go too far. The Mt Erica Hotel in Prahran is a true local gem, serving top notch pub food that won’t break the bank.

Make sure you start with the Coffin Bay oysters served with a mignonette dressing, or the steak tartare that wouldn’t be out of place in the best restaurants in Paris.

And for mains, go for a couple of pub grub classics – chicken schnitzel and steak and chips. But at the Mt Erica, the schnitty is topped with a herby slaw, and the steak is brushed with aromatic oil and served with a sublime bernaise sauce.

Start with cake, end with steak. Sounds like a plan.
