Immigration Museum

Nicky Buckly takes a tour of the new JOY exhibition at the Immigration Museum and discovers how colour can be used to elevate your mood and spark joy.  

Joy: See It, Share It, exhibition features the work of eight diverse Melbourne artists by joyful and colourful installations, artworks, stories and experiences, aiming to connect with visitors on an emotional and experiential level.  and is guaranteed to brighten up the Melbourne winter. The exhibition runs at Immigration Museum  until August 29th 2025  

The creatives behind Joy are drawn from a range of diverse backgrounds, embodying Museums Victoria’s objective to welcome and be inclusive of all communities, and actively seeking to engage under-represented audiences 

  • Jazz Money: Wiradjui and queer artist who works with poetry and film (reflective space) 
  • Elyas Alavi: Afghanistan-Australian visual artist, curator and poet 
  • Nixi Killick (NKX):  ‘a future positive fashion imaginer’, creating a mix of vibrant streetwear, balanced with sculptured technology infused wearable pieces 
  • Spencer Harrison: queer artist creating bold colourful works in paint and projection 
  • Beci Orpin: high profile creative practitioner whose work occupies a space between illustration, design and craft 
  • Callum Preston: exploring joy through nostalgia, multi-faceted artist/designer most known for creating full-size replicas 
  • Nadia Hernandez: a visual artist whose painting, drawing and collage brings together political narratives and family stories 

During her visit, Nicky also learnt about the history of the Customs House, which is the building that houses the museum, and she also visited the Reorient exhibition, where Chinese, Italian Australian photographer, Pia Johnson, takes self-portraits against colonialist architecture, reclaiming the space.
